About SLTV

Support our campaign for a Sheffield local television channel. We welcome letters of support, offers of assistance, comments on our proposals and programme suggestions. Read on for more information.

Building on our local history of culture, creativity and innovation, our goal is to establish a sustainable local television channel for the Sheffield City Region that serves the public interest in local news, information, education and entertainment and offers a platform for local talent and creative expression.

Sheffield Local Television represents a consortium of Sheffield-based organisations launched on 11 February 2011 and led by Community Media Solutions Ltd (CMS), a Sheffield-based media development agency, and Cultural Industries Quarter Agency (CIQA), an urban regeneration and economic development agency with a focus on Sheffield’s creative and digital industries. Participants include Sheffield Live, Kinematic Media, South Yorkshire Film-makers Network, Sheffield Independent Film Training (SHIFT), Visualis, Sero Consulting, Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre, Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival, Tramlines Festival, Studio of the North, Sheffield University, Sheffield Hallam University and The Sheffield College. The consortium has been supported by Sheffield City Council, Creative Sheffield and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

SLTV has held fifteen open meetings since February 2011, to which key local stakeholders have been invited. It has held two public meetings, in September 2011 and July 2012, attracting over 120 participants. The consortium has also received cross party support from local MPs and councillors in its campaign for Sheffield to be included in the list of ‘pioneer areas’ for local television. Although Sheffield was not included in Ofcom’s provisional list published in December, the final list was extended to include Sheffield in May 2012. Following the inclusion of Sheffield in the list of pioneer areas SLTV has been able to finalise its business plan and proposals for a local TV channel. Our application to operate a local TV channel for Sheffield was submitted to Ofcom on 13 August 2012.

Get involved
SLTV is the only applicant to operate the Sheffield local TV channel that is locally owned and that is set up for public and community benefit as a not-for-profit company. We believe the local TV channel for Sheffield should be locally-owned, locally controlled and have a distinct local identity. Any person or organisation who supports our aims may join our consortium.
